our conversations

I've been wanting to document some of the conversations that I've been having with my kids the past few days. This picture of Abigail is from a few days ago. She has been asking to get her ears pierced and finally took matters into her own hands.
Well they are actually ear rings from our Mr. Potato Head. But they sure did make her feel special. She kept asking me if she was a rock star or a movie star. The maraca is a prop for a microphone. I guess she is going for the rock star look.

Yesterday before school Abigail started talking about wanting a sister again. Here is how it all went down.
Abigail - "I wish I was an only child."
Me - "I don't. You'd have to play by yourself."
Abigail - "But Nathaniel's mean to me and Jesse pulls my hair. I just want them to play school with me. Jesse doesn't sit still. Nathaniel doesn't want to. I just want a sister. That's all I ever wanted to make me happy. (Pause). I just want a sister (in a very serious tone)....and a laptop." (Big smile)

A few weeks ago she asked for a sister. I explained that if I had another baby it might not be a girl. Her response "We can just trade it with someone else!"

Now Nathaniel decided that he was going to be a mountain lion on Monday.

He drew spots on his hands with marker...

And crawled around outside on all fours. He also made himself some lion food (sand and walnuts found in our backyard.)This is our conversation from yesterday morning.
Nathaniel - "Mommy do you want to hear my rules?"
Me - "Sure."
Nathaniel - "Don't climb up the chimney. (Pause) Do you want that to be your rule mommy?"
Me - "Yeah. That's a good rule for me too."
Nathaniel - "Do you want to hear the rest?"
Me - "Sure."
Nathaniel - "Don't climb out the window. Don't walk mud in the house. Don't play ball in the house. Don't eat honey in bed. Don't open the door when you're driving or you'll GET EATEN BY A BEAR!"

And last night Nathaniel and I were talking about stitches. His initial response was "So, when I go to the hospital they stitch me up with a sewing machine?" After I had explained the actual process I had to think about what images were going on in his head. Gotta love kids and their imaginations.

And this little monkey...

He decided it was dress up time and decked himself out in our cowgirl outfit topped off with the cowboy hat. He came walking over to me with a sheepish grin, so proud of what he had done all by himself. He proceeded to stand in front of his siblings trying to get their attention and show off his new costume. I love how the vest became a new wig for him.

That's it for now.
