two

We had a birthday packed weekend. So many photos to share.

On Saturday we celebrated Jesse turning two. I have been doing some reflecting on the past two years. When May comes around I start to think back to when I was pregnant with Jesse and had to walk to school to pick up Abigail. I remember the impatience I felt when waiting for Jesse to be born and how many times people would say "The baby still isn't born?" The drama I felt when he finally arrived. How much easier the transition from 2 to 3 was compared to what I had imagined. The hours of holding Jesse in the sling. He eventually wore a hole right through the side of it. The warmth of his little body beside me as we slept at night. His big blue eyes gazing up at me as he nursed. His content and sunny personality.

And look at my 2 year old now.

Still sunny.

Still those big blue eyes.

When it was time to bring out the presents, Abigail and Nathaniel were much more excited than Jesse.
Jesse was initially interested in opening the gift bag and ripping off the wrapping paper.

However, he was more interested in returning to his trusted favorites than play with his new toys. We had to try and lure him back with more gifts to open.

Okay, he is too young to appreciate a book that actually has his name and nickname on it. In time.

But the winner for this 2 year old. Markers. He waited patiently as Daddy opened them for him. I love how he is leaning on Andrew's knee.

Trying out the new markers was a family affair.

Soon it was cake time and Jesse was checking out what was happening in the kitchen.
*Photography note - there was a huge rainstorm approaching and the room was extremely dark. I generally don't use flash so these pictures are a bit dark.

Jesse spotted the candles and had to announce "Hot!"
I was a bit divided on what to use for Jesse's birthday cake. I normally make something for my family. We happened to be at the Mennonite Relief Sale that morning and I picked up a fresh strawberry pie. I was considering making a cake in the afternoon, but my terrible head cold forced me to keep it simple.

He knew just what to do with those candles.

I am so glad I went the strawberry pie route. Everyone ate it all up. There was no cake left over with just the icing eaten off. No one had to fight for which colour smartie they wanted. It was peaceful and delicious. I may just need to perfect my pie baking skills.

Happy Birthday Jesse! We love you!
