kitchen before

When we first moved into our home we knew that someday we would renovate.  When our initial renovation plans began, the kitchen was not included.  After sitting with the initial concept drawings for a couple years, it began quite obvious that our kitchen needed to be demoed as well.  It was last updated in the mid 1980's and with the extent that we were jumping in, we knew it only made sense to gut the kitchen at the same time.

With all my before pictures, it wasn't until we moved out that I realized I had completely forgotten to take pictures of the kitchen and family room.  So, after going through MANY pictures, I have found a few that demonstrate the kitchen before renovation.

The hardwood floor was installed when Abigail was a baby.  It was at this same time that Andrew painted all the oak veneer cupboards.  We never got around to putting up a backsplash or trim around the window.  Once we knew it was being gutted in a few years, so many other things made it to the top of the to do list.  So, the floors will stay and everything else is going.

Behind the fridge is the main floor bathroom.  This is the only room that isn't being touched (just a new floor).  The door on the left is the back stairs and the door to the right is the stairs leading to the basement.  Both these staircases are gone.

The door to the hallway leading to the bedrooms.  (Look at my little ones.  Nathaniel is around 2 and Abigail 5 in this picture.)

The peninsula looking into the family room.  The peninsula is being replaced with an island in the centre of the kitchen.

A view from the dining table into the kitchen.  Our new dining area will be where the boys room used to be.

And now the during...

All the cupboards are gone.

The stairs leading upstairs are ripped out.  The basement stairs and door to the side yard will be gone soon.

The stairs and door are now gone.  Make way for future pantry!

The view into the kitchen from the front of the house.  We enlarged the opening of the original hallway to twice the size.  This picture was taken when one layer of the brick was removed.  You can still see the original second layer of brick yet to be taken down.

These two pictures were taken this afternoon.  You can see the framing of the pantry in the far back.  You can also see the framed opening into the dining room to the very left.

A closer look at the pantry and small hall to the main floor bath.  The framing is done, electrical being finished up early next week.  Insulation goes in Wednesday.  This project is moving along!
