three

We were prepping Jesse all week that he was turning three.  When he was asked how old he was turning he would always turn to me and ask "Mommy, how old me be?"  Three!!!

Now being able to show you are three is tricky for a three year old.

Sometimes you need some help from a grown up.

It is not easy.

I remember reflecting on Jesse's personality last year.  Go here to see his second year birthday post.  I wrote about his sunny and content personality as a baby and how he was still this way at age 2.  Well, I can still say this at age 3.  My sunny boy.

As if a trip to the fire station wasn't enough, Jesse also got cake and presents.

He was checking out his new truck puzzle.

Trying to see grandma.

Back to the puzzle.

Grandpa was showing him a card game he received.

And this gift came in a close second to the firestation trip.

He was ready to get down to work.

And this outfit hasn't had much of a rest since last weekend.  He and Nathaniel are almost always playing "workers".  This morning they dismantled and rebuilt a bridge in our family room.  I think we'll have to wait a few years before we build a new deck to fully utilize this fascination with tools and building.

In the Netherlands, it is customary to congratulate not just the person celebrating their birthday but also the entire family. So here it goes!

Andrew and Catherine, haartelijk gefeliciteerd met de derde verjaardag van jullie zoon!

As I recall, Abigail also just celebrated her 8th recently so haartelijk gefeliciteerd met de achte verjaardag van jullie mooi dochter.

(Hearty congratulations on the third birthday of your son. Hearty congratulations on the eighth birthday of your beautiful daughter.)

And no Dutch birthday greeting would be complete without their crazy birthday song:

Every year on my birthday I get at least one phone call if not more with some people singing this song, including the hieperdepiep cheering at the end, although minus the screaming as my cousins are too old for it now.

ps: During my youtube hunting, I found this awesome rock music + sock puppet rendition: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRlVCjcF1BA&feature=related

Awesome! I am definitely showing these clips to my kids in the morning. And what the heck, you speak Dutch? Your talents are endless!!

Well, I would be stretching the truth if I claimed to speak it. I've had a few years of formal Dutch courses. My step-father is Dutch, so there's a whole wing of my family that doesn't speak a lot of English. I like languages, so I decided to try and pick up Dutch. Still trying really :-) When I go for longer visits, I get to the point where I can engage in basic conversation, but of course it's hard to practice here and a lot of it gets very rusty.

I hope the kids enjoyed the videos!
