Our first day out of Gatineau Park was into Ottawa to watch the Changing of the Guard. Both Andrew and I had visited the Parliament Buildings as children and remember this as a highlight. So we were up early and made it in time for the 10 am start.
The waiting time involved wasn't thrilling to our kids.
Neither was the actual Changing of the Guard ceremony. Frankly it was a bit of a disappointment for me too. I remember seeing RCMP on horses as a kid.
But we stuck it out to the end.
After a quick snack and smart decision that our kids needed to have lunch before we even thought about visiting another attraction or touring the Parliament Buildings, we took a walk into Byward Market. There we found an Asian restaurant serving sushi.
As we waited for our meal, Jesse's chopsticks turned into a rocket ship.
After lunch we visited a local bakery to find Andrew a coffee. I remember their flaky pain au chocolat from years ago.
Check out all that butter!
After coffee and dessert, we quickly had our plan for the afternoon. The kids all wanted to visit the Mint.
The Notre-Dame Basilica was on our way so we stopped in for a few minutes.
Then a short stroll to the Royal Canadian Mint.
Even the short stroll was too much for this guy. He was refusing to walk the half block.
But we made it!
After the tour we visited the gift shop to feel a real bar of gold. Andrew tried to steal it.
We walked past the Art Gallery.
Then back into Byward Market to a frozen yogurt shop for an afternoon treat.
Enjoying the shops of the Market.
We ended our afternoon at the locks.
More Ottawa highlights to come!
